Why marble

Why people still love marble countertops

Marble is a natural stone that formed from limestone under heat and pressure. Because of that, it has soft, flowing veins. In fact, few materials look as elegant.

Marble also stays cool to the touch. For that reason, bakers love it for rolling dough. Plus, it brightens a bathroom like nothing else.

What to know before you buy marble countertops

Marble is softer than granite or quartzite. On the Mohs scale, it sits around 3 to 4. So it can scratch more easily.

Also, acids like lemon juice, vinegar and wine can etch the surface. That leaves dull spots. However, many homeowners enjoy this patina over time. If you want zero upkeep, consider quartz or quartzite.

Care guide

How to care for marble countertops

Caring for marble is simple once you know the rules. First, wipe spills quickly, especially acids. Next, clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner or mild soap. Finally, use coasters and cutting boards.

In addition, reseal from time to time. A water test helps. If water darkens the stone, it is time. You can find more stone care guidance from the Natural Stone Institute.

Marble countertops vs marble-look quartz

Love the look but not the upkeep? Then marble-look quartz is worth a look. It copies the veining and never needs sealing. Still, real marble has a depth that quartz cannot fully match. We are happy to show you both.

FAQ

Marble countertops: common questions

Are marble countertops good for kitchens?

They can be, if you accept some wear. Marble is softer than granite, and acids like lemon or wine can etch it. Many people love the lived-in look. Others choose marble-look quartz instead.

Do marble countertops need sealing?

Yes. Sealing helps resist stains. We seal natural stone at install, and you reseal from time to time.

What is the difference between etching and staining?

Etching is a dull spot where acid reacts with the stone. Staining is color soaking in. Sealer helps with stains, but it does not stop etching.

Where does marble work best?

Marble shines in bathrooms, vanities, fireplace surrounds and baking areas. It also suits islands in homes where people cook gently.

What does marble cost?

Marble prices vary a lot by slab. The best way to know is a written quote. We list the slab, fabrication, edges and install line by line.
