Why granite wins for outdoor kitchen countertops

Outdoor counters face sun, heat, rain and the odd spilled sauce. So the stone has to be tough.

Granite like this is formed by heat and pressure, so it handles hot sun well. In addition, it resists scratches from grill tools. By contrast, quartz contains resin that can fade in direct sun. That is why we steer most outdoor jobs to granite.

Design tips

Planning outdoor kitchen countertops

A little planning goes a long way outside. Here is what to think about.

Pick the right color

Very dark stone can get hot in full sun. Mid tones are often more comfortable.

Choose a honed or polished finish

Polished is easy to wipe. Meanwhile, honed hides water spots.

Plan cutouts early

Have grill and sink specs ready at templating.

Build a solid base

Your island frame must be level and strong before we template.

Allow overhang support

Bar seating may need brackets under the stone.

Seal and care

Reseal now and then and rinse off pollen.

Materials

Stone choices for outdoor use

Not every stone belongs outside. Here is a quick guide.

How it works

Our outdoor kitchen countertops process

Outdoor jobs follow the same clear steps as our kitchens. However, we pay extra attention to the base and the cutouts.

Measure the island

First, we measure your island or bar once the frame is built. We also confirm grill and sink models.

Pick your slab

Next, you choose the exact granite slab. We help you pick a color that suits sun and shade.

Cut, install and seal

Then we cut in our own shop and install with our own crew. Finally, we seal the stone. For general care advice, the Natural Stone Institute is a good resource.

FAQ

Outdoor kitchen countertops FAQ

What is the best stone for outdoor kitchen countertops?

Granite is usually the best pick. It handles sun, heat and temperature swings very well. Also, darker or speckled granite hides dust and pollen.

Can I use quartz outdoors?

We do not recommend quartz in direct sun. The resin in quartz can fade or discolor with UV exposure over time. For covered patios, ask us about your setup.

Do outdoor counters need sealing?

Yes. Natural stone outdoors should be sealed. We seal at install, and a simple reseal now and then keeps it protected.

Can you cut for a grill and sink?

Yes. We cut openings for built-in grills, side burners and sinks to your spec sheets. Then your installer handles gas and water hookups.

Do you build the BBQ island?

We fabricate and install the stone top. For the island frame, we coordinate with your builder or mason.

Lifespan

Making outdoor stone last for years

First, pick a slab that suits full sun. For example, mid-tone granite stays cooler than very dark stone.

In addition, keep a cover on the grill area in heavy rain. Also, rinse off pollen and dust now and then.

However, avoid harsh acids and bleach on the stone. Instead, use mild soap and water for everyday cleaning.

Then reseal the granite when water stops beading on the surface. As a result, stains stay out and the color stays rich.

Meanwhile, check the base each season. Because the frame carries the stone, it should stay level and solid.

Finally, call us if a chip or crack appears. That way, small issues stay small.
